There’s something special about Sundays in Greece, especially in a seaside town like Kavala. The pace slows down, the sun feels just right, and the smells of grilled meat and sea breeze seem to settle into every corner of the city. Here’s how my ideal Sunday in Kavala went down—from flaky bougatsa in the morning to a perfectly charred gyros at night.
I kicked off the day with a mission: bougatsa, that glorious, warm, custard-filled pastry that somehow makes morning feel like a reward. I grabbed one from Lemonidis, one of Kavala’s most well-known bougatsa spots.
Now, don’t get me wrong—the bougatsa was fantastic, flaky and creamy and dusted with just the right amount of powdered sugar and cinnamon. But the coffee? Brutal. Thin, bitter, and just not the kind of thing you want to ruin a peaceful Greek morning with.
So I did what any self-respecting caffeine snob would do: I carried my bougatsa over to Lulu Maudite, a cozy little specialty café just around the corner, and ordered a proper espresso. Sat down, opened my bougatsa box, and had the breakfast I was actually craving. The combination of great coffee and perfect pastry? Game changer.
With the caffeine doing its thing, I made my way down to Rapsani Beach—just a short walk from the city center and incredibly convenient. The water was calm, the crowd was chill, and the whole vibe felt like Kavala on a Sunday: relaxed, unhurried, local.
I swam, I laid out, I people-watched. It was one of those moments where you realize the beach doesn’t have to be remote or famous to be perfect. Sometimes it just needs to be right there.
When the sun hit its peak and hunger started creeping in, I walked over to Achinos, one of my favorite seaside tavernas in town. I grabbed a shady table with a view of the sea and ordered a cold beer, grilled fish, and a spread of salads—Greek, horta, and a spicy tirokafteri that totally stole the show.
Everything was fresh, simple, and exactly what a Sunday lunch in Greece should be. The kind of meal that makes you want to linger forever… or at least until you’re too full to move.
After that feast, there was only one thing left to do: nap. I headed back to the apartment, closed the shutters, and drifted off with that dreamy combo of sun and food coma. It was glorious. No alarms. No plans. Just that perfect post-lunch pause.
As the sun started setting, I cleaned up and headed out to Naval, one of Kavala’s cooler evening spots. It’s got that open, sea-facing layout, great cocktails, and a solid music playlist. I grabbed a drink, watched the sky shift colors, and just soaked it all in.
And when the hunger crept back in, there was only one place I was going: Spyros Gyros. No frills, no trends—just traditional charcoal-grilled gyros, wrapped in pita with all the right stuff. Crispy edges, juicy inside, smoky flavor… the kind of gyros that reminds you why this is a national obsession.
There’s nothing like a Sunday in Kavala. It’s a mix of sweet and savory, sea and sun, naps and noise. The city manages to feel alive without being hectic, full without being crowded. And if you follow this itinerary? You’re guaranteed a Sunday well spent.
